Swiss computer scientist Niklaus Emil Wirth has died at the age of 89. He is known as the designer of several programming languages including Pascal, Modula, and Oberon.

He was a professor at Stanford University, the University of Zürich, and ETH Zürich.

In 1984, he received the Association of Computing Machines (ACM) Turing Award and in 1994 he was inducted as a fellow of the same association.
